It is well-known that exploitation in the music industry is rampant. Singers have in the past said that they are offered as low as Rs 5,000 for a song. Only big brands such as Sid Sriram are paid huge amounts. The rest of them are exploited like crazy.
In her latest post, singer Chinmayi Sripaada, who is known for a number of chartbusters, revealed that a prime music label wants her to work for free. "I got a huge message saying a big-time music label is recreating older songs and a production house invites me to be a part of the video and audio production - No remuneration will be involved. I mean - what even! Wonder when this exploitation will stop," she wrote.
If someone like Chinmayi was approached with a 'Zero remuneration' offer, one can imagine how low the pay is in the music industry.
As per algorithmic trader S Ravichandran, the situation is going to be worse in the era of AI. "Very soon, generative AI music to mimic the style and voice of top singers will be a reality. I hope Indian singers copyright voice, style, features and any other unique aspects legally to preempt such attempts," he wrote.
