'Extra - Ordinary Man', wherein the word 'Extra' stands for extras on movie sets, hit the screens today (December 8). Does it stand a chance against Nani's 'Hi Nanna', which incidentally has been receiving flattering reviews? What can be expected from Nithiin's latest box-office outing? Check out our review:
Story:
Nani aka Abhinay (Nithiin) is an aspiring actor who has been condemned to be an extra. He is in for a roller-coaster ride when a film director casts him as a cop protagonist in an action movie set on the AP-Odisha border. Before he can soar high as a star, his dream is snapped when the director shows him the exit door and casts someone else.
Shocked by the snub and inspired by the script of the film he didn't get to do, Nani aka Abhinay pursues an evil man named Nero (Sudev Nair). Can he vanquish the villain and become a hero in real life?
Performances:
Nithiin's choices have been dull lately. This film is not a bright choice but what works for him is the genre. Nithiin enjoys playing that fake reckless cop with little swag and all the possible optimism. While his performance lacks energy, he somehow is more watchable than in 'Check' and 'Macherla Niyojakavargam'.
The less said about Sree Leela, the better. As the brainless CEO of a Rs 400-Cr company, she falls for the male lead in a ridiculous turn of events. The star heroine at least got to dance well in 'Skanda'. Here, even the dance choreography fails her. Sudev Nair is average, while Dr. Rajasekhar makes an incompetent extended cameo.
The bunch of comedians on display don't match the comic timing exhibited by Rao Ramesh, who plays the hero's father.
Technical Departments:
Harris Jayaraj's music is respectable. While the background music is not up-to-date, the songs (especially 'Danger Pilla' and 'Maisamma') are enjoyable. Both songs, however, have been failed by the picturization. Even 'Brush Vesko' could have been better. The cinematography (by Yuvaraj C and two others) is pretty dull.
Merits:
1. The hero's character. He is an aspiring artist who wants to rise from the ranks of a junior artist.
2. Whatever you may say against the movie, you can't complain that it is predictable.
3. The scenes involving the hero and his parents.
4. The pool of comedians on the platter.
5. Clever dialogue-writing.
Demerits:
1. The Sree Leela scenes could have been way better.
2. Influences from movies like 'Kick' and 'Race Gurram'.
3. The acting graph of Nithiin doesn't rise adequately in the second half.
4. Some scenes are loud.
Vox Verdict:
'Extra - Ordinary Man' attempts to add a comical spin to the vigilante action drama genre. Writer-director Vakkantham Vamsi's treatment is titled towards entertainment. Some comedy episodes will click with audiences in 'B' and 'C' centres.
Rating: 3/5
