IAS officer Smita Sabharwal Ignites Controversy, Calls for Removal of Disability Quota

Smita Sabharwal, the IAS officer of 2001 batch belonging to Telangana cadre, has sparked a row by calling for the scrapping of reservations for the differently-abled populace. She opined that quota for those without physical fitness in premier services compromise on meritocracy.

"Does an Airline hire a pilot with a disability? Or would you trust a surgeon with a disability? The nature of the All-India Services (IAS/IPS/IFoS) is field-work, long taxing hours, listening first hand to people’s grievances-which requires physical fitness. Why does this premier service need this Quota in the first place," Smita wrote on X.

Predictably, Smita is facing flak from many quarters. "This is such a pathetic and exclusionary view to have. Interesting to see how bureaucrats are showing their limited thoughts and their privilege too," wrote Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena.

In her defence, the IAS officer wrote that the AIS has different demands compared to other Central Services. "The talented differently-abled can surely find great opportunities," she added.

Known as The People’s Officer, Smita became the first lady IAS officer to be appointed to the Chief Minister's Office during KCR's tenure as the CM.
