Arvind Kejriwal to resign: What next for Delhi?

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday delivered a shocker by announcing his resignation. "Two days from now, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the Chief Minister's chair only after the order of the people," he has been quoted as saying.

Kejriwal was put up in jail for months in connection with a liquor policy before he was given bail recently by the Supreme Court. He wants to win a fresh mandate now.

But the catch is that the AAP supremo can't have control over when the elections can be held for the Delhi Assembly. "Arvind Kejriwal demands early polls in November along with Maharashtra and Jharkhand. At the same time, he says a new CM will be elected in two days by MLAs. For early polls to be held, his government has to resign. Then it’s up to the Election Commission whether it agrees to their demand or holds it as scheduled in February 2025," wrote analyst Amitabh Tiwari.
