MPhil is not a recognized degree: UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) today surprised many and shocked some by issuing a notification saying that the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) is not recognized in India. The body warned students about universities, asking them not to opt for it.

"UGC advises students not to take admissions in M.Phil. It's not a recognized degree anymore," reported PTI, the news agency. Manish Joshi, the UGC Secretary, cautioned the students out there not to seek admission in any MPhil program offered by universities.

ANI reported that the university authorities have been asked to "take immediate steps to stop admissions to MPhil program for the 2023-24 academic year".

Those students who have applied for MPhil would now have second thoughts about going ahead with their pursuits. So many Social Sciences and Humanities post-graduates are said to be pursuing useless courses in the name of MPhil. The new regime aims to discourage them from doing so and stop a section of the academic establishment from taking advantage of the naivete of the students.
