Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was today mocked by a TMC MP on the premises of the new Parliament complex. Rahul Gandhi, the senior Congress leader, filmed the mimicking, sparking a major outrage.
The BJP is now using the incident to deflect attention from the mass suspension of Opposition MPs, which has been described by many as a dictatorial move. "If the country was wondering why Opposition MPs were suspended, here is the reason… TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mocked the Honourable Vice President, while Rahul Gandhi lustily cheered him on. One can imagine how reckless and violative they have been of the House," the official Twitter handle of the ruling party today wrote.
In the afternoon session of Rajya Sabha, the VP said that he was hurt by the visuals of the mocking. "Do you understand what went through in my heart? It is an insult to my background as a farmer and as a community member," Dhankhar told P Chidambaram, who is a senior leader of the Congress party.
The BJP will continue to milk the controversy. "Those who lack decency and basic regard for Constitutional positions are today trying to lecture others on upholding democracy. These so-called leaders indulging in such shameful acts repeatedly is why people repose their faith in BJP and continue to reject parties like Congress and TMC," wrote Karnataka BJP leader Tejasvi Surya.
