Oberoi Group's PRS Oberoi is no more

Chairman Emeritus of The Oberoi Group Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi is no more. He passed away earlier on Tuesday. He was 94. Honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, Oberoi was a legend in the hospitality industry. "It is with deep sadness that we inform the peaceful passing of PRS Oberoi, Chairman Emeritus of The Oberoi Group, earlier today," a statement made by the Oberoi Group said today.

Several business leaders and political leaders today condoled Oberoi's passing away. They recalled his splendid achievements in the hospitality sector. "He made ‘Oberoi’ a global byword for the Indian luxury hospitality experience and the first to put an Indian hotel on the very top of global rankings. He also rallied the group heroically but quietly post the 26/11 attack on their Mumbai flagship," wrote Anand Mahindra in his tribute.

"A visionary leader in the global hospitality industry, his legacy of world-class excellence and refined luxury has left an indelible mark. His Vilas resorts added immense value to India as a tourism destination," wrote Amitabh Kant on Twitter.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote that Oberoi was trained in Darjeeling and that his achievements have been inextricably linked to West Bengal.
