Bishan Singh Bedi, 77, is no more. The former Indian cricketer passed away on Monday due to an age-related illness. Described as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, the iconic bowler played Test cricket for India from 1966 to 1979. He played a total of 67 Tests and took 266 wickets, says a Wiki entry about his stats.
Several prominent personalities started putting out condolence messages soon after the news came out. "Bishan Singh Bedi was one of our best is no more. It’s a loss to our cricketing fraternity. My deep condolences to his family," tweeted former pacer Irfan Pathan. "Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bishan Singh Bedi. He was a great cricketer and an even greater human being. He was a moral beacon for all those who knew him," wrote cricket enthusiast and author Ramachandra Guha.
England's off-spinner Jim Laker was once quoted as saying this about Bishan: "My idea of paradise is Lord’s in the sunshine, with Ray Lindwall bowling from one end and Bishan Bedi from the other."
A sports journalist recounted a bowling spell at the Eden Gardens Test of 1969. "Ian Chappell, a fine player of spin, was on 99. Bedi bamboozled the Australian batsman with the one where he held the ball in the palm of his hand and glided his wrist under it to dismiss Chappell," he wrote.
