According to national media sources on Monday, Parag Desai, the executive director of the Wagh Bakri Tea Group, has passed away at the age of 49. His demise was a result of a head injury sustained during an incident in which he was chased away by street dogs. The severity of this head injury has left many in shock, highlighting the growing concern of street dog-related incidents contributing to road accidents in India.
There has been outrage in India over courts not allowing municipal authorities to tackle the dog menace. The demise of Parag Desai suggests that the menace is so rampant that even the super-rich are not immune to the threat. "Even the super-rich aren't immune to the menace of street dogs. Desai's company has an annual revenue of more than Rs 2,000 Cr. When will it end? Is there any government body or any NGO even working at tackling this?" commented Ravi Handa. "This death is on the exalted justices of the Supreme Court, who think that the lives of dogs are more important than that of humans," wrote Mukul Agarwal.
Hundreds of deaths due to dog bites have come to light in recent years in India. "Poor people die daily due to street dogs so we don’t care but this time a business tycoon is gone… Our streets are no longer safe for walking," wrote Whyte Knight.
