YSR Congress Party youth wing leader Rashid was hacked to death by an assailant in Palnadu District's Vinukonda on Wednesday night. Visuals from the attack are shocking. The savage attack has shaken the conscience of many. The assailant has been claimed to be a TDP activist.
"Jilani, a leader of Telugu Desam, cut off Rashid's two hands and attacked him with a knife on his neck," wrote Sajjala Bhargava Reddy, the YSR Congress Party Media and Social Media Coordinator.
The murder right in the middle of a busy road has cast a shadow on the deteriorating law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh.
A thorough investigation must be held to rule out the role of local factionalism. If it is found that it was a political murder, the government must take steps to rein in the political violence.
Local rivalries between YSRCP and TDP activists in parts of Andhra Pradesh are well-known. A perception is growing that the ruling TDP is not reining in the undercurrent of violence in some parts of the State. Statements by some leaders talking about revenge are not helping matters either. Such statements only embolden the cadres.
