USCIS extends Green Card validity extension to 36 months for renewals

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) defines a Green Card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card) as a card that allows you to live and work permanently in the United States. The news is that the USCIS has extended the validity period of Green Cards for lawful permanent residents. If you are eligible to file Form I-90 to renew your green cards, here is the news for you.

"We are automatically extending Green Cards for 36 months when lawful permanent residents file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card. Your I-90 receipt with an expired Green Card is evidence of your continued status," wrote USCIS.

The validity period for Green Cards has been extended to 36 months for applicants renewing with Form I-90(AFP). Previously, this was 24 months. The extension provides the applicants with additional time.

The new policy allows Green Card holders "more flexibility while waiting for their replacement cards".

The implications are positive. Card holders can now remain outside the country for 36 months without risking their residency status.

"Lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card may be eligible for this extension," the authorities said.
