Cinephiles, critics criticize SIIMA for ignoring content-driven films

The 11th edition of the South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) is due to be scheduled in Dubai in September. As expected, the big-ticket movies and major blockbusters of 2022 have garnered the maximum number of nominations: 'RRR', 'Sita Ramam', 'Kartikeya 2' and 'DJ Tillu' are secured nominations in big numbers.

However, films like 'Ante Sundaraniki' and 'Oke Oka Jeevitham' have been ignored. Natural Star Nani's film was a box-office disaster but it did have good themes and strong making values. Sharwanand's film was a hit at the box-office and used the fantasy genre to an emotional effect.

The SIIMA jury has neglected some other good titles such as 'Masooda' and 'Virata Parvam'. The Sai Pallavi-Rana Daggubati film had a decent storyline and good technical output. It was a disaster at the box office, though. Vishwak Sens 'Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam' was another acclaimed film that has been neglected at the awards ceremoy.

"Hoping the Nandis and the National Awards give 'Masooda', 'Ante Sundaraniki', 'Oke Oka Jeevitham' and 'Virata Parvam' a fighting chance. These films deserve some love," wrote film critic Abhilasha Chrukuri, commenting on the SIIMA affair.
