OTT deals: Small films face a gigantic task

In the wake of the pandemic in 2020, film producers (especially inexperienced ones) daydreamed that OTT platforms will flood them with offers. They ventured into making so-called content-driven films. The problem with most content-based movies is that only those who make them believe that they possess strong content. A majority of the audience who watch them find them lacklustre.

The fate of small producers who made movies in the past few years believing that OTT platforms will compete with each other to strike deals with them is now akin to that of small producers who made urbane movies over the past few decades in the hope that multiplexes will warm up to them.

In a recent interview, 'Pelli Choopulu' producer Yash Rangineni said that the situation is really bad for small movies. He added that barely 2% of small projects get the luxury of clinching OTT deals prior to their theatrical release. Since most theatrical releases flop anyways, the producers have negligible bargaining power in a post-theatrical scenario.

OTT platforms are not offering even 30% of the film's budget to small film producers even in optimistic scenarios.
