Toll-free number in Telangana to curb street dog menace

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed officials to set up a call center (a toll-free number) for reporting street dog issues and to take swift action. This is a one-of-a-kind initiative at least in the southern part of India.

The decision has come in the wake of a recent incident involving the death of a kid. The CM reportedly expressed profound sorrow over the incident in Jawahar Nagar, Hyderabad, where street dogs fatally attacked a two-year-old boy. Comprehensive measures to address the problem of stray dogs attacking walkers, especially kids, were long overdue.

The CM, as per a daily report, also proposed forming an expert committee to deal with the situation. The committee will find representations from veterinarians and high-profile organizations like Blue Cross to "investigate whether environmental or seasonal factors contribute to street dog attacks on infants and children".

Meanwhile, the Congress government is also taking steps to fulfil its poll promises made to farmers, among others. Recently, the CM suggested that his government is getting down to starting welfare work now that Lok Sabha elections are behind.
