Usually in politics it is common to see nepotism and how it is openly encouraged in the Indian political system. There are supporters and opponents of this, equally. Those who support this argue that no matter the entry may be easy due to family background, it is tough to survive unless one proves themselves. The same now holds good for both KTR and Jagan who are watching their sisters engaged in a political slugfest in Telangana’s political scene.
Kavitha is already an MLC and earlier she was an MP from Nizamabad while Jagan’s sister YS Sharmila is yet to contest any elections. This time she is expected to contest for Telangana Assembly from a safe seat in Khammam region. However what baffles everyone is how the temperature has already heated up between these sisters of high-profile politicians.
The battle between them and in particular, the Liquor Scam case on Kavitha and alleged mishandling of Sharmila by Telangana police has hogged limelight in the last one week. But conspicuously absent is any visible support from their brothers, KTR and Jagan. Diehard fans of Kalvakuntla and YSR family are hoping that their brothers come to their rescue. But it is not happening as yet.
The alleged differences between Jagan and Sharmila apart, many feel at least after the recent episode, Jana should openly support his sister. KTR who is usually strong in witty attacks on opponents is yet to openly support his sister Kavitha in alleged witch-hunting by the BJP. At the same, there is also a silver lining to it. Though sister sentiment is expected in emotionally charged politics of Telugu states, this may be an opportunity for both of them to rise independently.
Kavitha was seen as being propped up by her father while Sharmila banks on her father's legacy. They are now facing their battles strongly and attacking their respective political rivals. Only time will tell whether this becomes a successful one for them, but this is also a time when both Kavitha and Sharmila can carve a special niche for themselves as firebrand politician’s, independent of the safe cocoons provided by their high-profile brothers. Let’s hope that no matter what, the Telugu states progress well and such charged atmospheres are definitely not a good omen for the future of AP and Telangana.
