Indian social media is full of claims of Hindus coming under attack in Bangladesh during the ongoing unrest in the country. Rabid Islamists are said to be terrifying and intimidating Hindus by attacking places of worship and by kidnapping Hindu women. Are the claims true?
Some commentators within India have disputed the claims. They have accused popular journalist Arnab Goswami's Republic TV of trying to foment communal tensions. In a video clip, a Bangladesh Hindu 'mahajyot' leader is heard saying that all Hindus and their places of work and worship are safe in Bangladesh.
So, Hindus are safe in Bangladesh, then?
Wait, the story is not over yet. Bangladeshi media itself today reported that Hindus are being targeted by Muslim mobs. "Aside from the largest English daily in Bangladesh, the BBC and the New York Times, even the European Union in Bangladesh has now acknowledged there have been attacks on minorities and their places of worship," reminds Rishab Vats.
As per The Daily Star, a well-circulated Bangladeshi newspaper, Hindu homes and businesses were attacked by mobs on Monday non-stop. Valuables belonging to Hindus were looted in at least 27 districts in Bangladesh, the report said.
