Fact check: Has BJP really promised Rs 50,000 to women voters?

On Wednesday night, a social media post by the official BJP handles went viral in no time. The post promised to pay women Rs 50,000 per annum. It was seen by many commentators as a sign of desperation on the part of the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah duo in the wake of Rahul Gandhi promising Rs 1 lakh to women.

The truth of the matter is that social media post was a gaffe. The BJP wanted to convey the message only to the voters of Odisha, not the entire country. The saffron party has since withdrawn the social media post.

The corrected version is this: "Under the leadership of Modi ji, the BJP has decided to provide cash vouchers worth Rs 50,000 for women in Odisha for the next two years under the Subhadra Yojana. This amount is meant for the women, not men." This is what BJP national president JP Nadda has been quoted as saying.

Is RaGa's lakhpati promise finding traction among women voters?

The verdict seems to be clear: according to on-the-ground reports and insights from leading pollsters, it appears that trust in the Congress party's promises has waned. In this scenario, it's not surprising that the BJP hasn't deemed it necessary to make fiscally unsustainable promises.
