Gautam Gambhir quits active politics

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Gautam Gambhir today said that he would be ceasing to participate in active politics. He urged BJP National President JP Nadda to relieve him of his duties.

"I have requested Hon'ble Party President JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind," the former cricketer wrote.

The announcement comes days after it was speculated that Gambhir won't be given a party ticket this 2024 Lok Sabha election season. "Had long said that he spent way too much time on cricket for an MP. Probably was told he will not be getting a ticket and was given the opportunity to resign gracefully," wrote a social media user with knowledge about internal party matters.

A well-followed Twitter handle made speculations about Gambhir's exit. "I have heard that BJP has denied him a Lok Sabha ticket due to his anti-party activities. Gambhir is mentoring Mamata Banarjee-ruled and Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR, the IPL team) and left the Yogi Adityanath-ruled Lucknow for this," he added.
