In West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, several Hindu women have alleged that they have been sexually harassed by the goons of a local TMC leader named Sheikh Shahjahan. On Saturday, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya put out a video clip of Hindu women in a village speaking of their harrowing experiences.
"More women come out and speak against sexual exploitation by TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, whom Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended on the floor of the Assembly. Can it get worse than this? A woman CM allowing her leaders to use rape as a tool to subjugate and rule. If she has any shame, she should allow WB Police to arrest Shahjahan immediately. He won’t be able to evade law for long, anyway," the BJP spokesperson wrote on social media.
While most of the media has ignored the issue, some mainstream outlets are coming out with reports about how a huge communal controversy is brewing in Bengal. "Sandeshkhali is Mamata Banerjee’s most dangerous quicksand in 12 years," says a report by The Print.
Recently, the National Commission for Women, in its fact-finding report, stated that "disturbing testimonies from women" have been reported from the region. The women spoke of "widespread fear and systematic abuse by both police officers and members of the ruling TMC".
