It is known that, for the past few days, a new COVID-19 variant named JN.1 has been causing a rise in Coronavirus cases in Kerala. More than 40 countries have reported the subvariant so far. China and Singapore are among them. In the latter, thousands of new cases have been reported.
In this context, the Centre today issued an advisory to all States. The advisory takes note of the fact that suspected cases of the JN.1 variant have been detected in India. "The States are hereby urged to maintain a state of constant vigil over the COVID situation. They have to report and monitor district-wise SARI and ILI cases regularly," the advisory says.
What do the aforementioned abbreviations stand for? ILI stands for influenza-like illness, while SARI stands for severe acute respiratory infections.
"More cases of the JN.1 variant are expected as the virus has no boundary. But it is not a concern of the public because new variants of the novel coronavirus can appear in the future," an expert recently told Global Times.
