It is known that, for the past few days, a JN.1 variant of COVID-19 has been causing a rise in Coronavirus cases in Kerala. Dr Gagandeep Kang of the Christian Medical College, Vellore has weighed in with her opinion about the same, saying that the situation is not alarming. She implied that hospitalizations haven't gone up proportionally.
"You worry when hospitalizations go up, particularly if they are associated with only one type of people. The concern arises when young people start getting hospitalized, not merely when those with comorbidities or the elderly, who are susceptible to all viruses, are affected," Kang has been quoted as saying by South First.
"The variant is not of much concern in India unless the severity of disease or hospitalization rates are affected by this strain and vaccines continue to work to safeguard us," wrote Dr. Swati Maheshwari.
More than 40 countries have reported the subvariant so far. "More cases of the JN.1 variant are expected as the virus has no boundary. But it is not a concern of the public because new variants of the novel coronavirus can appear in the future," an expert told Global Times recently.
