After the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3 today, the ISRO chief made mention of the lessons learned from Chandrayaan 1 (which was a partial success) and Chandrayaan 2 (which was a flop). In July 2019, the visuals of the then ISRO chief breaking down in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the failure of the second mission broke the hearts of many.
What caused the failure of Chandrayaan 2 remains a matter of interest. It is said that ISRO's scientists learned from the mistakes of the failed mission in making the third mission a grand success. India today became the first country in the world to land on the south pole of the Moon.
A report submitted by the ISRO in 2019 said that the space organization lost all contact with the Vikram lander on the day of the landing when it was around 335 metres (0.335 km) from the surface of the moon, resulting in the failure of Chandrayaan 2. "The objective of the lunar mission was to make a soft landing on the surface of the moon. The reason behind the crash landing of Vikram lander was that it tilted 410 degrees, instead of the planned 55 degrees," a report published by Business Standard said. A software glitch was the reason.
After the second mission failed, ISRO said that rover, lander and landing operations would get more focus in the third mission.
