It is known that some political parties in India want reservations in the private sector to be introduced. In 2017, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that 50% of jobs in the private sector must be reserved.
On August 15, marking Independence Day, two States witnessed similar demands. Bihar's Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said that private sector quotas will be brought in once the caste census is completed.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Opposition is reported to have made a similar demand. On its part, the Yogi Adityanath government refused their demand.
Netizens, reacting to the two developments, expressed their concern. "Private sector quotas will result in a bleak future for business. A poor investment climate is the last thing we need. Backward States like Bihar shouldn't even toy with the idea. Bihar and UP are two of the poorest States that need to witness rapid investment. Reservations are discouraged by entrepreneurs," a Facebook user wrote.
The caste census issue will be politically weaponized by some political parties in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, analysts have predicted. Caste-based parties want to make the issue of quotas in the private sector the biggest political rallying point in the coming years.
