Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill from Punjab has come up with a strange idea. He wants a Bill to be passed by Parliament. The Bill is named The Prevention of Wasteful Expenditure on Special Occasions Bill. Its purpose is to mandate the maximum number of guests that can attend a wedding, the number of varieties that can be cooked/served, and the amount of money guests can spend on purchasing gift items for the bride/groom.
The MP feels that there is no requirement for more than 100 guests to be present at a wedding. And the dishes shouldn't exceed a maximum of 10. Each guest can spend not more than Rs 2500 on gift items.
The MP is in favour of people donating their monies to NGOs, orphanages, etc instead of "wasting" it on fat weddings.
The Bill is likely to be ignored by the Lok Sabha. Any law that mandates how people should celebrate the special events in their lives is dictatorial, nutty and arbitrary. Most politicians opt for mega fat weddings. They will be the first ones to oppose the law.
