Mandatory parental approval in love marriages? BJP CM sparks row

A lot of love marriages take place after the elopement of youngsters. Young lovers, both boys and girls, decide on elopement because they face stiff parental resistance. In recent months, several MLAs in Gujarat have urged the BJP government to pass a law making parental approval mandatory in love marriages. Interestingly, this demand has come from both BJP and Congress MLAs.

On Monday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that his government will study the possibility of a system making parental approval mandatory in love marriages. He added that it will be done ONLY if the proposal is constitutionally feasible.

The BJP CM has been trolled mercilessly by Netizens for making the comments at a community outreach program. Playback singer Chinmayi Sripada said, "Bonkers. Absolutely bonkers." Experts are of the opinion that the proposal is obviously not constitutionally feasible

However, there are also those who feel that the move is not senseless. "Parental consent should be required only if the age is between 18-21. It will be a good balance between freedom of choice for adults, as well as some parental control during a transition phase to adulthood," wrote a Netizen named Shilpa Khopade.
