Congress sparks row by mentioning castes of Karnataka ministers

The size of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's cabinet is 34 ministers. In a controversial move, the All India Congress Committee has put out the names of the Ministers along with their caste details. The same has been done to highlight how many Lingayats, Vokkaligas, Muslims, Christians and others have been inducted into the cabinet.

The move is making commoners opine that caste-based politics goes against the idea of a "progressive" India.

BJP supporters are seeing the list as an attempt to divide Hindus on a caste basis. "Why are the castes of Mulsim members not mentioned when the castes of Hindu Ministers have been highlighted?" a Netizen asked.

Alok Bhatt wrote, "Please tell us if Rahim Khan is a Sunni or Shia, Ashraf, Rajpoot or a Mansoori, Gaddi, Faqir, Hajjam, Julaha, Kabaria, Kumhar, Kunjra, Mirasi, Arzal or Azlav, Barelvi, Hanafi, Salafi, Deobandi."

The list also validates the view that caste is very much relevant in Karnataka. "Caste (sub-caste equally) alone matters and the Congress got its caste arithmetic right and winning. Politicians know what works best for them. I once again say that caste and sub-castes are the only two things that matter in Karnataka elections," wrote journalist DP Satish.
