The Supreme Court delivered a significant verdict on Wednesday regarding media freedom and criticized the government's actions. The court questioned whether the government was using the National Security Act to stifle criticism by media companies.

The ban on a Malayalam news channel, 'Media One', was lifted by the central government, and the channel's owner went to court over the matter. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, said that the government had failed to provide factual evidence to justify the ban, and that national security claims cannot be made on mere speculation.

The court also stated that criticism of government policies and actions by media companies cannot be considered as a reason for inciting anti-national sentiments, as freedom of the press is essential for the survival of democracy. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting quashed the order refusing to renew the channel's broadcasting license and said that national security should not be used to curtail people's rights.

The government was criticized for its attitude towards media companies, and the court stayed a verdict by the Kerala High Court that had ruled in favor of the Centre's decision to revoke the channel's permission. It is being seen as support for anti-BJP groups that have been highlighting the anti democratic credentials of BJP and its supportive forces in the media.
