A 36-year-old Indian-origin construction executive, Amandeep Singh, has been sentenced to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison for a fatal drunk driving crash that killed two teenagers in New York in 2023.

Singh was driving his pickup truck at 95 mph (150 kmph) in a 40 mph zone while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. His blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit, and police recovered a bottle of tequila from his truck. He was driving the wrong way down a road when he struck the car carrying the two teenagers, Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein, both 14 years old. The two boys were returning home from a tennis tournament victory dinner. Singh fled the scene but was later apprehended by police.

Emotional Sentencing Hearing

The sentencing hearing was filled with emotional statements from the victims' families. Parents and grandparents of the deceased teenagers expressed their grief and anger, calling Singh's actions "inhuman torture" and "the definition of evil."

Singh expressed remorse for his actions, stating, "This was all my fault. Losing a child is the greatest grief. I have committed the great sin. If anyone should have died, it should have been me."

Justice Served

Despite Singh's guilty plea and apology, the judge handed down a significant sentence, acknowledging the severity of the crime and the devastating impact it had on the victims' families.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk and impaired driving. The consequences of such reckless actions can be irreversible, leaving families shattered and communities heartbroken.
