US court supports employment rights for spouses of H-1B visa holders

Thousands of foreign workers' partners were attempted to be debarred from working in the US by some pressure groups in the US. The attempt has now received a setback, thanks to a federal appeals court in the US.

Work authorisation has now been granted to spouses of H-1B visa holders. The ruling effectively dismisses a challenge brought by a group (named Save Jobs USA) representing US-born tech workers. Many from India see it as a great piece of news, as it "effectively preserves an Obama-era rule that allows approximately 90,000 spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the US."

Times of India in its report said that the H-1B visa program is extensively utilized by the US technology sector to employ individuals in roles that necessitate specialised training or education. "Technology giants, such as Google (a subsidiary of Alphabet), Amazon.com, and Microsoft, had filed briefs with a lower court backing the 2015 rule of allowing spouses to work," the report adds.
