We have heard of instances where the budgets shot up by two or three times. But here is a film whose budget got raised by twelve times. The film was not made by an amateurish filmmaker but by an acclaimed director. He is Kollywood's pathbreaking maker Vetrimaaran.
In his latest interview, he revealed that the recent 'Viduthalai Part 1', which had Vijay Sethupathi in a cameo, was supposed to be completed within a budget of Rs 4.5 Cr. But the cost escalated to something like Rs 65 Cr. “I didn’t have any clue of what I was going to shoot; I still don’t. Sometimes, I am very confused,” he added.
Vetrimaaran, known also for 'Vada Chennai' and 'Visaranai', has been criticized by a section of movie buffs. "How can he even brag about it? If he were the producer of the film, would he have tolerated such an escalation?" a cine-goer wondered.
The second part of 'Viduthalai' is going to be released in 2025. The first part was successful commercially. It has to be seen how much the producer would spend on the second part.
