In a shocking development, actor Vijay Antony's daughter Meera (16) was found dead today at her residence in Chennai's Teynampet. Meera, a Class 12 student, was battling depression.
As per national media reports, Meera had hung herself. She was rushed to a hospital in Mylapore. The doctors declared her dead.
Meera's death by suicide has saddened and shocked many. "While an investigation will be launched to interrogate the suicide, it is important for the media not to sensationalize the tragedy for TRPs," a commentator said.
Mental health experts are taking to social media to appeal to those who are battling stress and depression to seek timely help from experts, families, and friends. "Depression is more commonplace than it appears. Organized, able mental healthcare is not widely prevalent in Indian society. Most of those who need mental health advice don't get it for want of the shortage of experts in most towns. Family is the biggest support system out there. Nurturing family bonds is the best antidote to depression," a columnist once wrote.
