The team behind Kalki 2898 AD has officially confirmed that Deepika Padukone will not feature in the much-anticipated sequel to the futuristic action saga starring Prabhas and directed by Nag Ashwin. Vyjayanthi Movies issued a statement noting that, “After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”

In the original film, released on June 27, 2024, Deepika played Sumathi (SUM-80)—a character yearning for motherhood and a brighter future amid a dystopian world that fused Mahabharata legends with sci-fi. While reports suggest her role was pivotal for the sequel, insiders revealed it had been reduced to a cameo, fueling her decision to exit the project. Unconfirmed industry buzz also points to negotiations over working hours and pay hike demands after Deepika’s return from maternity break. This marks her second major exit of the year, following her departure from Spirit—another Prabhas-starrer directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, where she was reportedly replaced amidst similar discussions on work conditions.

Despite this back-to-back shake-up, Deepika’s star continues to rise. The acclaimed actor is now set to headline Atlee's pan-Indian action epic with Allu Arjun under Sun Pictures, portraying a warrior queen in what promises to be a visual spectacle. Her casting was announced with exclusive behind-the-scenes visuals from the film’s sets.

Amid speculation and shifting alliances, Deepika Padukone remains one of India's leading stars—her choices continually shaping the landscape of big-budget, pan-Indian cinema.
