Music Shop Murthy Review:Melodramatic but makes for a fun watch

'Music Shop Murthy', directed by Siva Paladugu, has been produced by Harsha Garapati and Ranga Rao Garapati of Fly High Cinemas. Let's find out what the film is about.

Story:

50-year-old Murthy (Ajay Ghosh) runs a music shop in the times of online music. A middle-class man with a nagging wife (played by Amani), he struggles to make ends meet. For him, music is more than just bread and butter; he is sentimentally attached to music and has developed a keen sense of music over three decades. When he comes across Anjana (Chandini), a wannabe DJ, he is motivated to take up DJing as a side hustle, something which eventually becomes his passion. As he aspires to change his career, a direct confrontation with his wife leads to emotional consequences.

Performances:

Ajay Ghosh's stature in the Telugu film industry has grown over the years. From big-ticket movies like 'Rangasthalam' and 'Pushpa' to mid-range ones like 'Mangalavaaram' and 'Bedurulanka 2012', he has seen it all. 'Music Shop Murthy' offers him a lead role that primarily carries the function of an endearing underdog.

Chandini Chowdary, after 'Colour Photo' and 'Gaami', puts behind her the blemish of doing inconsequential movies like 'Sammathame'. In the film under review, she comes into her own.

Amani is failed by uni-dimensional characterization. She is in the same mood for 90% of her screentime, scowling at her husband. Amit Sharma plays an enfant terrible whose entry is convenient in the film. Bhanu Chandar plays Anjana's stereotypical dad who doesn't want his daughter to pursue her DJ dreams.

Technical Departments:

1. Music: The DJing scenes should have been far more imaginative in terms of music.
2. Cinematography: Sreenivas Bejugam's work is functional.
3. Editing: Bonthala Nageswara Reddy's craft didn't place much demands on him. The film is pretty linear.

Analysis:

DJing is often associated with creating a fun and energetic atmosphere at nightclubs, parties, and other events. A good DJ can read the crowd and select music that keeps them engaged. They also need to be skilled at mixing tracks smoothly and creating transitions. The film under review is a dramatic, Tollywood-ish take on chasing an unconventional dream.

The police station scene involving Ajay Ghosh's character gives a high. Another scene, set on the terrace of a hostel, shows immense potential to offer entertainment.

The final stretches, running up to 20 minutes, is where 'Music Shop Murthy' turns melodramatic.

Writer-director Siva Paladugu should have added more zing to the narrative in the second half. A sense of intrigue should have been built around Anjana to rev up these portions. Murthy's college-going daughter nurses slight hatred for her dad. While it is understandable, the pay-off could have been emotionally satisfying in the climax.

Vox Verdict:

'Music Shop Murthy' is a family entertainer. While its music could have been far more imaginative, the drama works. The storyline is good and the treatment is feel-good.

Rating: 2.75
