Food safety issue: Detergents added to milk is a rampant problem

Food safety inspectors in Hyderabad have been active in the past few weeks. Several famous eateries, restaurants, bakeries and cafes have been inspected. And the results have been shocking so far.

An underreported and less-talked-about malaise affecting the quality of consumable food in India pertains to the contamination of milk. Liquid detergents are regularly added to milk by local manufacturers across India, including in Hyderabad. This is done because the "optical brightener makes the look whiter and the detergent adds extra froth to the milk".

This sort of dangerous adulteration will continue to happen in India as long as consumers want milk at cheap rates even at the cost of their health. The problem can be understood from the point of ticket prices for general coaches in Indian Railways. Ever since Lalu Prasad Yadav slashed the rates when he was the Railway Minister, things have been on the downswing. If people want things for cheap, cheap services is what they will get.

In the absence of public demand for quality food, no government will crack the whip on adulterers. "Customers don't really care about hygiene or how the food is made. If it's cheap they love it and now with paid influencers, all restaurants are the best because the top influencers got paid and endorsed it," Raveen K Pai, a social media user, laments.
