The detention of Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bandi Sanjay from his house at midnight by Karimnagar police caused protests throughout the state. The police used lathi-charge to disperse the BJP supporters who tried to stop Sanjay's arrest, and he was moved to Bommala Ramaram police station in Yadadri Bhongir district.
This has led to a tense atmosphere across the state, with BJP supporters holding dharnas and getting arrested. The arrest of two BJP MLAs, M Raghunandan Rao and Eatala Rajender, and the house arrest of other BJP leaders made matters worse. Sanjay has complained to the Lok Sabha Speaker's office, stating that he was arrested without a warrant. The BJP legal team has filed a petition opposing the arrest.
The national BJP leadership has taken the arrest of Bandi Sanjay seriously. While BJP general secretary Tarun Chugh condemned the arrest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president JP Nadda inquired about the situation.
Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy expressed his dismay with the way Director General of Police Anjani Kumar responded, saying that he had no information about the cases against Bandi Sanjay. This led to speculation that the Centre may consider imposing President's Rule in Telangana due to the lawlessness in the state and the alleged targeting of political opponents.
A group of BJP leaders will be meeting with the Governor to demand that she recommend President's Rule in the state, and the Centre is expected to request a report from the Governor on the current political situation. Based on her report, the Centre may make a decision regarding President's Rule in the state. But is the President's Rule practically possible with the state of affairs happening? Well, anything is possible if the power center wishes to exercise its power for nothing.
