Social media is awash with memes and jokes about Kannadigas these days. With videos of Kannadigas insisting on migrants speaking in the local language going viral, the image of Karnataka has been battered. Millions of social media users are now exposed to memes that stereotype Kannadigas as narrow-minded language fanatics.
In one of the viral videos, a father is seen kicking his own infant for addressing him as 'Papa' and not 'Appa'. Jokes of this sort must serve as a wake-up call for adamant language warriors. "Language warriors have been doing a huge disservice to their own state by their insecurities and inferiority complex," opines Akshay Alladi, an X user.
Kannadigas have failed to silence the fanatics amongst them. "Kannada chauvinists organised huge online mobs and said absolute gutter-level things about north India and northies. They also abuse Hindi. Most Kannada people gave them passive support. You can't blame others. Kannada chauvinists went out of their way to create this image," wrote Ceteris Paribus, an X user.
Many social media users, however, have supported Kannadigas. "They are the sweetest people around. The Delhi-centric media's narratives are one-sided," wrote Average Joe, a Netizen.
