Rahul Gandhi Pushes for Caste Census, Faces Questions on His Own Caste

Rahul Gandhi has been pitching for proportional caste-based representation at all levels of government. Recently, he said that the words 'Dalit', 'OBC' and 'Adivasi' are not found anywhere in the budget document. He suggested that the reason for this is that those who prepared the Budget document in the Finance Ministry are all from upper-caste communities.

Responding to the Congress leader's criticism, BJP MP Anurag Thakur said that nobody knows to which caste Rahul belongs. "There is a lot of talk about OBC and caste census. He whose caste is unknown is talking about a census," he said. Later, Rahul's alliance partner, Akhilesh Yadav, found fault with the BJP MP. "How can you ask for his caste?" the former UP CM asked.

Was the BJP MP wrong in wanting to know Rahul's caste? No, if we go by Congress' political agenda. The Congress party and the INDIA bloc have been demanding that the Centre hold a caste-based census across the country. In other words, everyone in the country will be asked about their caste during the census. What is wrong in asking for Rahul's caste, then? "You can't expect 140 crore Indians to reveal their caste while Rahul Gandhi will stand exempted from it," a social media user said.

Columnist Arihant Pawariya reminded his readers that some Congress leaders have previously said that Rahul is a Brahmin. In that case, by Rahul's own logic, he can't be trusted to speak up for SCs, STs and OBCs. "If upper caste bureaucrats can’t be trusted to render justice to SCs, STs, OBCs (as per Rahul Gandhi), how can a janeudhaari Brahmin Rahul Gandhi be trusted to speak up for SC/ST/OBCs?" the columnist asked.
