Robots are often recognized for their precise execution of tasks. Until now, we have predominantly heard positive stories about these machines. However, consider this: a robot has been involved in a fatal incident, resulting in the death of a man in South Korea.
As per Guardian, a robot crushed a man to death after it failed to differentiate him from the boxes it was handling. The victim has been identified as a robotics company worker. The death has been attributed to malfunction. No malicious intent or culpability has been attributed to the robot.
"The industrial robot perceived the man as a box and crushed him to death. With the growing adoption of AI robots in the industry, robot misidentification incidents are becoming more frequent," a report said. Artificial Intelligence is not perfect and it does throw up inadvertent issues at times.
However, doubts have been expressed by some. "The robot lifts normal boxes without crushing them, but this man, even misidentified as a box gets crushed, weird," wrote Andres Velasquez, a Twitter user. Is there more than what meets the eye? Or, are we suspecting the machine needlessly?
