World Cup: Shocking dismissal of Sri Lankan batsman rakes up controversy

During Monday's ICC Men's World Cup cricket match, Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews was given out by the on-ground umpire for a rare but valid reason. The batter took more than three minutes to be ready for batting. The Bangladeshi side appealed for a wicket and the on-ground umpire asked the batter to leave the field.

"Angelo Mathews came with the wrong helmet. Then substitute came with the right helmet but time was passing and umpires were unhappy - then Bangladesh appealed for timed out and he was over 3 minutes so Mathews was given out," wrote Johns on Twitter.

"Angelo Mathews tried to tell Shakib Al Hasan that the delay happened due to helmets, but Shakib refused to take his appeal back," wrote Mufaddal Vohra, who tracks cricket matches on a minute-by-minute basis. "Angelo Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed in this manner," wrote ICC in a special blog post.

What does the concerned ICC rule say? "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out," says an ICC rule.
