Congress party promises a new IPL team in election manifesto

Political parties have promised all sorts of freebies this election season. Historically, some parties have made absurd promises and given strange assurances orally. For the first time, a party has promised a new IPL team in its manifesto.

The Congress party has said that Madhya Pradesh will get its own IPL cricket team if the party is voted to power in November this year. MP, where the BJP is the ruling party, will know which party will rule it for the next five years on December 3. The BJP is waiting to retain power after dislodging the Kamal Nath government in 2020.

"Among the many promises include efforts to bring an IPL team to MP! Is this the first time that an IPL team promise is in a party manifesto? And should this be seen as a freebie, a move to create more jobs, or simply a sign of the times, spinning a great Indian cricket dream for a ‘new’ MP?" tweeted senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.

The party has also promised Rs 25 lakh health cover, Rs 10 lakh accidental insurance, socio-economic and caste census, 100 units of free electricity, and 27% OBC quota.
