Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today sparked an online debate by writing a column on what Hinduism means to him. The column appeared in 'Indian Express'. The Congress party has projected the PM-in-waiting's article as evidence of his thorough understanding of Hinduism as against the BJP's alleged narrow conceptions.
Sanjay Jha, a lifelong Congress sympathizer, tweeted that RaGa has dived headlong into the Hinduism debate. "I have advocated this for long publicly. Shashi Tharoor has written a book on it. Congress needs to call out the bluff of religious fundamentalists masquerading as nationalists, exploiting religion for political profiteering," Jha wrote.
On his part, former Congress Minister Jairam Ramesh wrote that RaGa has truly elevated the public discourse with this deeply personal and thought-provoking piece. "This is in keeping with the personality who showed his real self all through the 4000-km long Bharat Jodo Yatra," he wrote.
A supporter of the Congress party said that Rahul's article has beautifully explained Hinduism. "We can’t limit Hinduism to a certain region or country. Hinduism teaches love, compassion and kindness. Hinduism teaches us to respect everyone. Real Hinduism is different from BJP Hinduism. Trolling and abusing in the name of Hindus is not Hinduism," he added.
However, sections of Sangh Parivar sympathizers and supporters have described the article as shallow. BJYM's Abhinav Prakash opined that Rahul is trying to dictate who is a Hindu and what is Hinduism.
