On Thursday, news came out that the Government of India has suspended visas for Canadians. This comes in the context of rising tensions between the two countries in recent days.
The Indian Mission has been quoted as saying that, due to operational reasons, with effect from today (September 21), Indian visa services have been suspended till further notice. The suspension is indefinite.
The other day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that India played a role in the killing of the Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, a ceremonial county in South East England. Nijjar is accused by the Indian government of trying to foment trouble in India by provoking a Khalistani uprising in Punjab.
India has vehemently denied Trudeau's allegation. However, the serious charge has soured the relations between the two formerly friendly countries.
The Khalistani secessionist movement has to be nipped in the bud. That's why the Narendra Modi government is believed to have been taking harsh measures. Canada will have to show proper evidence to prove its allegation that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Nijjar.
