Did Modi government really spend Rs 4,000 Cr on G20 Summit?

The G20 Summit was held in New Delhi. World leaders descended on India's capital city, which was spruced up ahead of the prestigious Summit.

A few political leaders from the Opposition have claimed that Rs 4,100 Cr was spent by the Narendra Modi government on decking up Delhi for the Summit. The figure is astonishing, especially because no major infrastructure project was put up.

Is the figure correct? As per G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, who has been associated with government agencies for the past decade, the allocated budget was far less than what has been mentioned by the Opposition camp. "And the actual spend was less than the budget. Let's wait for the actual figures to come out before we jump to conclusions. The Rs 4,100 Cr figure is fake," he said.

The figure was first put out by TMC's Saket Gokhale. It was later picked up by a section of the media. Going by Kant's words, we can be sure that the spend was not more than Rs 2,000 Cr.
