Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today likened to a poisonous snake by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge at a political rally in Kalaburagi, Karnataka. The personal attack comes at a time when political tirades have gone from bad to worse in the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections.

"PM Modi is like a poisonous snake. You might wonder if it’s poison or not. If you lick it, you will be gone," Kharge said.

Expectedly, the speech is drawing angry reactions from BJP supporters. BJP leaders are asking opponents to watch their language.

"Spewing venom for the country's Prime Minister, who is democratically elected by the people of India! Highly condemnable statement made by Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress is full of leaders with scant regards for democracy, serving a foreign national and hurling abuse at India's PM," wrote Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

Young BJP leader Tejasvi Surya opined that crores of Congress workers themselves are admirers of Modi. "This cheap comment by Mr. Kharge won’t be appreciated even by many Karnataka Congress workers," he wrote.
