Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed a plea request requesting a stay order on his conviction in the 2019 'Modi-surname' criminal defamation case.

The Surat Sessions Court dismissed his plea today.

Welcoming the move by Surat Court, the BJP party members made several comments.

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said this movie in court is a "slap on the Gandhi family's face." She also termed it "a victory for the common people of the country."

Former Union Minister and BJP leader Dr. Harsh Vardhan called it a "victory for the OBC community."

"The court has shown a mirror to Rahul Gandhi. The same mirror will be shown to the Congress party by the people. The country will not tolerate the humiliation of any community," Dr. Harsh Vardhan tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Congress party's communications chief, Jairam Ramesh, said that the party will avail itself of all possible legal options.

Former Union Minister Renuka Chaudhary, in a video address, called the verdict "disappointing."

The court found Rahul Gandhi guilty of criminal defamation on March 23 for his remark that "all people with the Modi surname are thieves" during an election rally in Kolar in April, 2019.
