Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' draws both positive, negative reviews

'Avatar: The Last Airbender', the American adventure fantasy television series, has started streaming on Netflix. The eight-episode series is a live-action adaptation of the animated television series of the same name (which was made from 2005 and lasted till 2008).

The earliest reviews are mixed. The Guardian has given it a high 4-star rating. "A sparkling return for one of the greatest fantasy series of all time," its headline said. "The Airbender franchise has confidently revived itself; this won’t be the last we see of it," the review further added.

Forbes had a lot of positive things to say in its review. "Throughout the show, you can tell this is made by a cast and crew that have a lot of love for the source material... Sometimes the VFX are great. The cityscapes are gorgeous," the review said.

On the other hand, Variety gave it a negative review. "While the show’s visuals and its Asian and Indigenous stars add authenticity to the series, the performances of the majority of the cast, no matter how earnest, don’t hold up to the weight of the narrative. Many of the series’ portrayals lack the extensive emotion needed to carry a show centering on the horrors of genocide, war and totalitarianism," the publication opined.

The series stars Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, a free-spirited and peaceful twelve-year-old airbender who was frozen in ice for a hundred years.
