Amazon Prime Video is going to bombard its subscribers with adverts from early 2024. The idea is to raise more revenue from its subscribers. "The UK's Prime customers, along with those in the US, Germany and Canada, will see ads early next year (2024) unless they subscribe for an ad-free option at an additional cost," BBC has quoted Prime's representatives as saying. After the aforementioned countries, Prime will replicate the policy in countries like France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia later that year.
At this point, there is no clarity about when the Indian market will see Ads. Disney+ and Netflix, in the past, have made similar policy decisions with the aim of revenue maximization. How much might the ad-free subscription tier cost? An extra $2.99 per month for those living in the US.
The news has been widely publicized. "Commercial breaks are coming to Amazon Prime Video. Subscribers who want to keep the streamer ad-free can still do so — for an additional $2.99 per month in the US," reported Variety.
The decision hasn't been welcomed unanimously by subscribers. "Streaming is officially just like regular TV.. except now we need separate apps for everything," wrote a subscriber.
