South India has produced some of the best and smashing hits in 2022, surpassing Bollywood in every way and in fact creating a new record of sorts, making the south industries proud. There have been show stealers from Kannada, Tamil and Telugu industries this year. Let’s look at highest earning films featuring south stars this year.
Yash
The Yash starrer KGF 2 was clearly the trail blazing hit this year, coming as a sequel to the pan India hit KGF 1. The film crossed 1250 crores and was critically acclaimed apart from its commercial success. It was the highest grossing Kannada film ever.
Junior NTR & Ram Charan
In Telugu, it is not common to see trending stars acting in multi starrer films but ace director Rajamouli made it possible with RRR. The film is also on its way to the Oscars, earning more than 1150 crores worldwide so far. After Bahubali, when no one thought that once again a Telugu film could do wonders so soon, the director made it possible. Ram Charan and NTR’s performances simply enthralled the audience and this film was Telugu industry’s pride that once again proved our roaring success.
Karthi, Vikram & Jayam Ravi
Ponniyan Selvan-1 was a massive hit, ending the drought of South India’s decades old Pan-India fame director Mani Rathnam. The movie had an ensemble cast of Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai and many more leading actors. The film raked in more than 450 crores worldwide.
Kamal Haasan
Kamal Haasan, our own Tom Hanks, was back with a bang this year in the form of Vikram. The spy and crime thriller was a smashing success and this film too ended Kamal’s failure streak in recent years. The film earned about 420 crores worldwide.
Rishabh Shetty
One more surprise yet deserved hit was Kantara, from Kannada. The Rishabh Shetty starrer enthralled the audience with its theme based on traditional Tulunadu folk rituals and earned about 345 crores in worldwide collections.
Vijay & Ajith
Vijay’s Beast and Ajith’s Valimai earned more than 200 crores each this year showing how the decades-old journey of these Tamil super stars is still going strong even in 2022.
Apart from this, Sarkaru Vaari Paata of Mahesh Babu, Kartikeya 2 of Nikhil, Charlie 777 by Rakshith Shetty were other showstoppers from South India this year.
