As people's preferences evolve, is it enough to simply present a good movie or does it require additional embellishment? Two recently released films, Balagam and Rangamarthanda, share some striking similarities despite their differences.
Creative genius Krishna Vamsi, a director with extensive theater experience, helmed Rangamarthanda, which starred veteran actors like Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam, and Ramya Krishna. Balagam, on the other hand, was directed by a relatively unknown filmmaker and featured a cast of up-and-coming actors.
Rangamarthanda was a passion project for the director, with no compromises made in presenting the subject matter. The aim was to create an impactful film without resorting to forced audience appeal. The film had a budget of ten to eleven crores and has reportedly failed very much commercially. Balagam, while also well-received, had a smaller budget and was focused on generating profits.
Although both films were praised by audiences, Rangamarthanda received slightly more acclaim. However, its limited theatrical release meant that it did not earn as much as Balagam, which had a wider reach.
Filmmaking must evolve with the times, and simply producing a good movie is not enough to ensure success. It is necessary to serve audiences in a way that satisfies their changing tastes. The introduction of new talent, like that seen in Balagam, can bring a fresh perspective to the industry.
If Rangamarthanda had been given a wider theatrical release, it may have performed better at the box office. Nevertheless, the film has left a lasting impression on those who saw it. It serves as a reminder that sometimes; it is better to focus on creating a quality product rather than solely on commercial success.
