On Women's Day, actress Hamsa Nandini shared her inspiring story of battling breast cancer. She was diagnosed with grade 3 carcinoma in July 2020, just as she resumed shooting for her film after the lockdown. Her mother had also battled breast cancer 18 years ago and unfortunately lost her life to it.
Hamsa underwent surgery and 16 cycles of chemotherapy, but soon after, she tested positive for BRCA1, which meant she had a genetic mutation that almost guaranteed a 70% chance of another breast cancer throughout her life. To mitigate the risk, she underwent invasive prophylactic surgeries last year.
Despite the harsh treatments and challenging prognosis, Hamsa made promises to herself not to let the disease define her life, fight it with a smile, get back on screen stronger, and educate and inspire others with her story. Thanks to early diagnosis, a supportive network of competent doctors and her family, and a positive mindset, Hamsa has stuck to her promises and is back on the sets, shooting for multiple projects.
She has also decided to dedicate herself to educating others about early detection through self-checkups, regular mammography, and genetic testing. Hamsa's strength and determination is an inspiration to everyone in the fight against all odds and marking this Women's Day, her story reminds us of the importance of self-care, early detection, and support.
